Sausage Gravy and Buttermilk Biscuits Recipe

This hearty breakfast dish is perfect for those lazy weekend mornings. The creamy sausage gravy and fluffy buttermilk biscuits will leave you feeling satisfied and ready to take on the day ahead.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) salted butter, frozen for 30 minutes
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:

Sausage Gravy

  1. In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until browned, stirring occasionally for about 4-5 minutes.
  2. Slowly whisk in the milk, 1/2 cup at a time, allowing the mixture to heat up before adding the next 1/2 cup.
  3. Once you add the 3 cups of milk, use the last cup to achieve the desired consistency. Add a bit more milk to thin it out if needed.
  4. Let the gravy come to a simmer. If it's too thick, whisk in a bit more milk. If it's the right thickness, add salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Now it's ready to serve!

Buttermilk Biscuits

  1. Preheat oven to 425* F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and grated frozen butter until it resembles coarse meal.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk and sour cream.
  4. Add half of the buttermilk/sour cream mixture, and mix with a spatula.
  5. When dry, add more of the wet mixture until the mixture is shaggy.
  6. If too dry, add a tablespoon of buttermilk and mix again. Do not over mix.
  7. Dust a smooth surface with flour and pour out the mixture. Roll out the dough to 1 inch in thickness.
  8. Use the book fold method to add layers of dough.
  9. After the second book fold, roll out until you get a square about 12 inches on the sides and about 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep.
  10. Use a cookie cutter to cut your biscuits, place them on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper, loosely touching each other.
  11. Brush with melted butter and bake, turning once through for 14 minutes.
  12. Get ready to indulge in some delicious homemade biscuits!
