Prue Leith on American Baked Goods
Prue Leith is a renowned restauranteur and on-air personality with years of experience in the television industry. She is a judge on The Great British Bake Off and The Great American Baking Show. In this interview at the Delish Kitchen Studios, Prue shares her true opinions on British vs. American cuisine, the biggest differences in baked goods, and what fans can look forward to in season 2 of The Great American Baking Show.
The Differences between British and American Cuisine
Prue Leith notes that she hasn't eaten in a lot of American homes, but from a restaurant point of view, the obvious difference is that Americans believe in size. American portions are much larger compared to the UK. In terms of baking, the differences are not significant. American influences are much the same as British influences, but there are some things that seem to be particularly American, like babka in New York. From a flavor perspective, the chief difference is that Americans generally like more sugar and frosting on their baked goods compared to the UK. Prue Leith prefers a smear of frosting rather than an inch, as she believes too much sugar and frosting can spoil cakes. She thinks it's the biggest mistake Americans make when baking, making the cake too sweet, which gives a sugar overload that makes it more challenging to eat a big slice as too much frosting detracts from the flavors of the cake.
New Flavors
Prue Leith loves the Great British Bake Off and the American Baking Show because they allow her to come across new flavors. She gets to taste new things from the family recipes that the bakers prepare. Prue eagerly wants to try anything she has never had before, meaning there's always plenty for her to taste and discover, no matter how many seasons of the show there are.
Bonding with Competitors
In the television industry, there are American competitions where people are desperate to win and will do anything to win, even at the expense of their competitors. Prue was worried she might be a part of that when taking on the American Baking Show but was relieved to see that no one behaves that way. Contestants on the American Baking Show seem to bond and become friends. They're very different from each other, but once in the tent, they seem to know what the vibe is, and so they come in prepared to be friendly, relaxed, and helpful. They're sweet, nice people, whom Prue has become fond of, and that is more important to her than anything else.
