Healthy greens take center stage as restaurants embrace National Salad Month

May is Salad Month for Local Restaurants

If you thought salad was just a simple mix of vegetables, think again! According to Heather Winn, a family and consumer science educator at Cherokee County OSU Extension Office, a salad can be a mix of different foods arranged on a plate and served with dressing. And with May being National Salad Month, local restaurants are talking about their creative and delicious salad options.

Newk's Eatery

Newk's Eatery has a range of delicious salads to choose from. Junior Sierra, the area director, recommended two of their most popular salads. The Spicy Jalapeño Ranch Salad features sliced chicken, grape tomatoes, carrots, green onions, seasoned black beans, avocado, cheddar cheese, and homemade spicy jalapeño ranch dressing. The Pesto Pasta Chicken Caesar Salad is another fan favorite. For something a little different, try adding Newk's Q Sauce, a mayo-based barbecue sauce, to your salad. With 15 salad options and 11 dressings (including three vegetarian options), Newk's salads can be customized to suit your preferences.

The Branch

The Branch also has a variety of salads on offer, including Tahlequah Mayor Suzanne Myer's favorite, the Cherry Springs Pasta Salad. Brendan Barlow, the manager, recommended trying their new Berry Chicken Salad and Southwest Salad with Shrimp. The Southwestern Salad has a flavorful pineapple mango dressing, and the Berry Chicken Salad features a tangy raspberry vinaigrette. For something truly unique, try Brian Berry's mother's recipe for sunflower seed dressing.

Salad Tips

If you're watching your calorie intake, it's best to go easy on the dressing. Winn suggests using no more than one tablespoon of dressing, and to ask for it on the side so you can control how much you use. Don't be afraid to mix things up by adding meat, fruits, nuts, or seeds to your salad for some extra flavor and texture. And if you're not sure where to start, Barlow recommends trying a simple Caesar salad to get started.
